Talking to your Child about Gambling

Talking to your child about gambling

It's important to talk to your child about gambling. This will help them understand the risks and make better choices.

These talks don’t need to be long. Keep things simple. Think of it as an ongoing, open conversation you will have with them as they grow up.

Give information for their age

Children start noticing more of the world as they finish primary school. They may see adverts for betting, or play video games that include gambling features.

Younger children

If you see gambling being advertised, mention that gambling may look fun, but often causes problems for people.

If adults in the house gamble, don’t make it seem normal or something that everyone does.

Explain to young children that gambling is not a way to make money.

Tell them that scratch cards are illegal for under-18s because they can be addictive.

If they play online games, tell them some games have tricks built into them to keep people playing.

If they ask for money for things like loot boxes explain that they may get nothing in return.

Young people

Young people age 12-17 can face a lot of pressure to gamble. This includes from friends or influencers. Listen to them and let them know you are on their side.

Tell them how children's brains don't fully develop until they're 25. This makes gambling appealing to them, but it also puts them at risk.

Make it clear to them that you do not want them to gamble while they are under 18 and why.

For example, say that:

  • gambling can cause money problems

  • gambling can harm your mental health and friendships

  • early wins are misleading

  • spending more money to win back what you lost rarely works

They may think this only means things like betting on sports. Remind them that gambling can also mean spending money within games on things like loot boxes which may not pay out a reward.
